TH4H returns from first deployment
Brownwood, TX, February 24th, 2010: TH4H, an organization created locally by Andrew and Kendra Putman, deployed to Haiti on February 6th and returned to Brownwood on February 15th with the goals of providing medical and missionary relief to the victims of Haiti following the 7.0 earthquake that physically affected more than 3 million people, and certainly affected all of the near 10 million living in Haiti. TH4H took an estimated 25,000 dollars worth of medical supplies and medicines donated by the local community along with 5 team members for the recon deployment. During the mission, TH4H accomplished many objectives which included rendering medical and nonmedical aid to 1200 people in 4 days. A list of the achievements and schedule followed while in Haiti as follows:
1. Assembled with Hope International Medical Missions of Harlingen Texas and assisted with the administration of the hospital in Fort Liberte. TH4H instituted a free clinic in the hospital to fill a void of care that had not been ascertained, which included optometry, generalized eye care, wound care other than admitted patients, generalized skin care, pain control, rehydration, and psychological support and spiritual care. During this clinic, with the donated prescription eyeglasses donated by Dr. Boron we were able to supply 200 people with prescription glasses, many of whom had never seen clearly in their life. We treated eye infections of which 2 in 5 had, and we also medically treated 700 people. During our total outreach at the hospital, TH4H outreach exceeded 1200 people.
2. TH4H met with mayor Charles Pierre of Fort Liberte about continuing medical and missionary operations at the hospital long term by a. Improving the quality of care by providing training to staff b. Improving the quality of care through the donation of medical supplies c. Continuing to help provide assistance to the understaffed facility.
3. TH4H also continued talks with the mayor about assistance with creating the 1st chaplaincy program in Haiti and assistance with police training.
4. TH4H effort continued by working with Aslan Youth Ministries out of New Jersey about their plans and projections of building a much needed orphanage in Quanaminthe, Haiti. These plans include the production of a new church for the community, a missionary house, and a free clinic that will be available to the public. With the assistance of Aslan Youth Ministries, we have opened the opportunity to our next deployment at this time to be scheduled the first week in May, 2010 to provide a completely free clinic to the city of Quanaminthe, population 20,000. However, this number is increased dramatically on a daily basis because it is the border point into theDominican Republic. Therefore, our projected service number at this free clinic will be around 1500 per week.
5. TH4H has begun the process of assisting with adoptions processes for orphans of Haiti to ease the operations and process for Americans wanting to adopt.
6. TH4H also visited The Fondation Messef run by Rev. Altesse Augustine. This orphanage currently serves around 50 small children, and several older children. We had the opportunity to visit with, assist with medical and nonmedical needs to the orphans, and provide love, which is what they are at most desperation for. We are continuing operations with this orphanage to assist with provided food, water, and medical care on a long term basis.
Conclusion: TH4H is calling this first mission a very successful deployment. God has taken his hands and worked through us in a miraculous way. The lives we touched, saved, and helped shouldn’t truly be counted in numbers. We provided an estimated 30,000 dollars worth of medical supplies and equipment just this deployment, with another estimated 60,000 dollars worth of supplies and equipment here in the Brown County area waiting to be shipped. We have reached out to the local communities in Haiti and have established our presence to maintain long-term efforts. We have begun the attempts at providing training to medical and police, and have assisted and relieved orphanages and are still currently doing so.
Future plans: TH4H plans to deploy again the first week in May, 2010. The goals for this deployment include, but are not limited to, creating and staffing the free medical clinic in Quanaminthe for the community, and providing mobile clinics in orphanages and churches throughout Haiti to broaden the assistance made available. We will also be assisting with governmental affairs between the Dominican Republic and Haiti regarding the border to establish a medical line of help and communication. We will continue with medical training to the employees of the hospital to increase the level of care, as well as provide medical equipment to the hospital to allow it to be more self sufficient and decrease the death rate.
The Hope for Haiti would like to thank everyone for the support and the assistance through donations of all kinds. Special thanks to Dr. Boron for providing prescription glasses, The Spa on the Creek for their fundraising efforts and constituting as a drop off point for donation items, Docs Pharmacy for the donation of tens of thousands of antibiotics, and anyone else who has given their time and assistance in anyway.
We are currently looking for volunteers to be deployed on our next trip and are developing some fundraisers for the big country area, so keep your eyes peeled.
We served proudly as your hands in Haiti, and the people of Haiti will never forget. The Hope for Haiti of Central Texas returns from recon deployment in Haiti with many accomplishments. Mission deemed very successful. |
